Topic of Controversy in Medicine
Welcome back to my blog!
Today's blog is about a hot topic related to my field of study.
Medicine is, as we know, constantly evolving with new scientific finds and evolved courses of treatment for patients. As much as this improvement is beneficial for patients, it can also be dangerous for them. In fact, doctors and psychiatrists are becoming so eager to come up with a diagnosis that they sometimes forget their patient's best interest. This problem has been a topic of controversy in medicine for a few years now. In the article linked to this blog, the main concern is about antipsychotic medication in children. This article provides studies explaining how the younger population who is given a higher dose of antipsychotic, for example, have a higher risk of unexpected or metabolic and cardiovascular-related deaths than the control group. According to various doctors and psychiatrists, these studies suggest other alternative of treatments should be considered before medication. On the other hand, some benefits of antipsychotic medication are listed further in the article. Whilst it is recommended using this type of medication as the last resort for children, it can help with various symptoms such as irritability, aggression, impulsivity, anxiety and more.
For my part, I agree with the article. I think, these days, medication is used as a quick band aid on the problem instead of really healing patients. Because of its accessibility, doctors and psychiatrists use this drug as a first remedy. This problem can bring wrong diagnosis and/or wrong use of medication. Moreover, the brain of younger people is still developing. Therefore, it is imperative to use this course of treatment with caution due to the negative effects it can have on children's health. I think money should be invested in finding new alternative and natural ways to treat mental illnesses instead of medication.

Such an interesting read! Thank you!
RépondreEffacerI have to say, I agree. Even today, more turbulent children are put on medication quite fast, and it's saddening to see how quickly and inefficiently this treatment is.
Quite an interesting article and really trending these days, especially in primary schools. Sadly, too many students are being medicated for the wrong reasons. Obviously, there are some students who really need it, while others simply need a different teaching style for their needs. Thank you for shedding the light on such a thought-provoking topic! Your article was skillfully summarized, and your reflection well developed.
RépondreEffacerHere are a few elements requiring your attention:
- Plural issue (I just want to check with you). You use "the younger population who are given a higher dose". If you are using "population as the 'singular' form, as ONE group on people, you need to use "the younger population who is given [...] but if you are considering it as many individuals, you have to use the plural form "the younger population who are [...]
- that other alternatives of treatment - other alternative treatments
I loooove your blog! I totally agree with what you said. People, these days, are always looking for an easy way out. Children might be taking the wrong medication, simply because their parents and/or doctors did not want to investigate the real problem. Finally, I was wondering if you had any ideas for alternative treatments.
